Floral Carpet
This spring, a stunning floral carpet adorned the whole length of the aisle at the All Saints church in Floreat, Perth. It was inspired by the annual Festival of Flowers held every year at the Arundel Cathedral in Sussex, England.
With a lot of planning and coordination with a multitude of volunteers that included local primary school children, church members, local businesses and others, 46 trays of flowers were created. Resting safely on plastic to protect the carpeted aisle, these 70 x 50cm trays were first filled with wet florist foam. These were then given to the various participants marked with a simple design and the flowers and foliage inserted. What looked like moss in some areas, was actually synthetic astro-turf. As the floral carpet is envisaged as an annual event, this recyclable item along with the plastic trays will save costs next time around.
The design was kept simple and consistent for the length of the carpet. At the altar end, the flowers reflected the church's logo. Other than the border, with contained only white flowers and greenery, the participants could then fill the designs with flowers and colours of their choice. The completed trays were then placed together to complete the overall design of the floral carpet.
It was quite a remarkable achievement considering the available resources and varying levels of expertise of the volunteers. However, enthusiasm for the project was not in short supply apparently!
The interest this display received surpassed expectation and this project is well on it's way to achieving the goal of raising funds, and awarenes for youth activities. View a slideshow of the floral carpet.
