Flower design in butter
Next time you have people over, try jazzing up your butter dish with this simple idea. It creates quite a response from guests!
We used 3 small metal cutters - 1 x leaf, 2 x flower (one medium, one small). Cake decorating cutters are the easiest to use. Very detailed cutters are not recommended as it is fiddly trying to remove the shapes. Flower shapes and leaves can be cut out freehand as big or small as you like, if you have no flower cutters.
Margarine does not work well for cutting shapes as it is too soft. The butter needs to be well chilled so that cutting out the shapes is easier to handle.
Method:
- Start by creating a base block of butter on your butter dish.
- Cut thin slices of butter about 2mm thick, and place on a piece of wax paper or a plastic surface.
- Small chunky metal cutters as shown below work best.
- Cut enough shapes for you design
- Use a toothpick to create lines & detail on leaves and petals.

- Return the butter slices to the fridge to cool if too warm to work with..
- Refrigerate cut out shapes until ready to use.
- Use a small piping bag of softened butter to create stems, trellis or twiddly bits as desired.
- Attach the flower & leaf cutouts using the softened butter in the piping bag as the 'glue'.

And voila - Your blooming butter dish is done!
